Paddle Information

Overview:
The tour launches at the Sumter County Marsh Bend Park. The tour follows the run of
the Lake Panasoffkee Outlet River to the Withlacoochee River and then heads
downstream to the Coogler/Wysong Dam, and returns. There are no fees. There are a
few small landings for rest. Facilities are available.

River Details:
The tour starts on the Lake Panasoffkee Outlet River, an old barge route from the
1800's that connected the citrus growers and cattle ranchers to the rail head in the
town of Lake Panasoffkee. The tour then enters an open area of the Withlacoochee
River known as Princess Lake and continues down river to the Coogler Dam. Princess
Lake has several large marshy islands that are home to many wading birds, the most
vocal being the Florida Limpkin. Its distinctive call echos across the lake during the
spring. The far end of Princess Lake holds a small old landing that was part of an old
citrus grove operation, on what is now the Panasoffkee Preserve and is a good resting
spot. Down river we there are only a few houses on the banks as we approach the
Coogler Dam. The boat ramp above the dam provides for a final resting area prior to
returning.

River Rating:
Easy/Moderate. This trip is suited for individuals with moderate paddling abilities.

Scenery Rating:
Excellent – Undeveloped, heavily wooded and in winter months there are a lot of
migrant wading birds. Summer time offers lush vegetation offering a great wilderness
feeling.

Trip Length:
Approximately 6 miles round trip/3-4 hours.

Current/Wind Impact/Issues:
Currents can be moderate to strong in a few  areas.
