Withlacoochee River at Hog Island
CR 635, Bushnell, FL 33513
This tour launches at the Hog Island Recreation Area within the Withlacoochee State
Forest. The tour heads south (upstream) in the direction of Silver Lake to the turn
around point is in the vicinity of the Iron Bridge Recreation Area, and returns. There

The Withlacoochee River is a beautiful winding “black water” river that varies in width
and depth. This area of the river is very rural in nature with most of the tour running
through State Forest or Preserve. Hog Island is an hour-glass shaped island with the
recreation area on the mainland side to the east, just off the river. Leaving the Hog
Island launch point the tour heads to the main channel of the river and travels
upstream, winding through bottom land hardwood forest with little to no human
development. This area of the Withlacoochee River is usually very shallow giving the
paddler a great view of the sandy bottom and banks. This is a relatively short tour, with
the turn around point being about 2 ½ miles upriver, returning around the other side
Easy/Moderate. This trip is suited for individuals with moderate paddling abilities.
Excellent – Undeveloped, heavily wooded and in winter months there are a lot of
migrant wading birds. Summer time offers lush vegetation which offers a great
wilderness feeling. Few, if any, power boats.
Approximately 5 miles round trip/2-3
