| The Great American Cooter Festival 2007 Kayak & Canoe Race Scroll to the bottom for Race results from 2006 The 2nd Annual Cooter and Hare Kayak Race will take place on Saturday, October 27th at 1:00 p.m. at Wallace Brooks Park in Inverness. Rules & Race Description This is a "shot gun" start 1/2 mile sprint race. There will be 3 classes of kayaks each with its own sprint. This is an amateur only race. No one commercially affiliated with any paddlesport business is eligible to participate. PFD'S must be worn! Failure to do so will prevent you from racing or disqualify you! There must be at least 2 competitors in a class for a race to run. By request, the old Cooter Class is now the OLD Coot(er) Class.This class is open to any craft powered solely by paddle power (oars or paddles only). Pedal boats may be raced in class, but no pedal power may be used. Participants must be 60 years of age or older and no boat deemed by the judges to have been built specifically for racing is eligible in this class. Prize: New Hurricane Kayak The Hare Class is any craft powered solely by paddle power (oars or paddles only). Pedal boats may be raced in class, but no pedal power may be used. This class is open to any age. Prize: New Wenonah Royalex Canoe This year we will also have a "Pro" Class for surf skis, outriggers, shells, racing kayaks and racing canoes. Prize: 100% of Pro Class Entry fees ($100 minimum guaranteed) plus a Swift Graphite Paddle Participants may enter only one class. A limited number of rental kayaks are available through Aardvark's by prior reservation. Cost is $20 per person on rentals. Call 352-795-5650 to reserve. A "Goody" bag will be provided to each entrant registered by 5 pm October 26th, 2007. Race Course All boats will be staged off the beach at Wallace Brooks Park behind the start line. (See map above.) Course length is approximately .5 miles total.
