| The Great American Cooter Festival 2007 Kayak & Canoe Race Scroll to the bottom for Race results from 2006 The 2nd Annual Cooter and Hare Kayak Race took place on Saturday, October 27th at 1:00 p.m. at Wallace Brooks Park in Inverness. There was a lighter than expected turnout due to a stalled front with intermittent rain showers and high winds. RESULTS: The Cooter Class was won by Clarence Short of Floral City racing in a Current Designs Extreme. Clarence took home a Hurricane Santee Expedition Sport provided by Aardvark's Florida Kayak Company and Hurricane Kayaks. The Hare Class was taken by last years overall winner Dave Welch of Inverness paddling a Current Designs Oracle GTS. Dave was originally going to race his Huki surf ski in the pro class but he scared off all the other pro paddlers, so he switched boats and moved to the Hare class. Mike Mondrall paddling a kevlar Wenonah canoe was breathing down his neck as they crossed the line. We are already planning next years event. We are looking at incorporating a poker run and changing the races to a best of 3 competition. We are also going to invite the local rowing team do an exhibition. We also need more sponsors so we can get prizes for 2nd and 3rd as well. |
